In June 2014, the American Medical Association (AMA) finally released a statement recommending that states NOT require sex-reassignment surgery to change a person’s gender designation on a birth certificate.

In my novel DOUBLE EXPOSURE, my intersex teen athlete Alyx was required to keep “Male” on her birth certificate until she had her official “reassignment” surgery. Surgery can complicate people’s lives when they want to identify with a specific gender. What we know is that statistically most intersex people are generally satisfied with their assigned gender, but like Alyx, not all of them.

Please join me on Saturday October 18, at 1pm at Room of One’s Own Bookstore for DOUBLE EXPOSURE’s official Wisconsin Book Festival Book Launch.
